Bali is 35 kilometres from the Rethimno and is a coastal village with important tourist infrastructure.

It is build at the area where ancient Atali was located and it was an important port during the Roman period.

It was created during the last years of Ottoman period and it was named with the Turkish name Bali from the word balli that means honey because in the region apiculture was developed.

The bay was used occasionally for the supply of rebels during the revolution. Holily Abbey of Saint Ioannis of Precursor is located in the region.
