Melidoni is 28 kilometres from the Rethimno and is located in an altitude of 100 metres.

During the Venetian period it was an important village, while at the Ottoman domination it was the fief of Big Castle.

During 1823 Turkish army laid siege to Melidoni cave and put fire with a result of death for all the people that were inside.

During 1897 in Melidoni took place the General Revolutionary Assembly of Cretans and was decided the autonomy of Crete.
